How it began

The decision to form an organised group to tackle this new threat to Cimla’s future was taken at the biggest and best attended public meeting that this long established and historic community has ever seen.

It all started however with the actions of just one person. A busy-body as the council would have you believe! That one person noticed a poster on a lamp-post, out of the way at the end of the cul-de-sac. The poster outlined how the fields and woods behind their street were candidate sites for the LDP. Slowly the word was spread and a small impromptu meeting decided to call the public meeting.

Initially one resident leafleted the entire Glannant estate, but for a second one residents rallied round and the entire areas was leafleted in 48 hours. The main reason for the leaflets was to inform
people of the candidate sites and then the meeting. They were doing the job that many said should have been done by the council. The response to the meeting proved one thing. Cimla still has a beating heart and a community spirit.

The public meeting

The meeting took place at Cimla Community Centre on August 21. It was filled to capacity, with around 300 people attending. It was difficult to find anyone before or during the meeting who was really familiar with the implications of the LDP on Cimla. A slide show of the area and the
candidate sites drew widespread gasps from the audience. The gasps became a whirlwind when all the sites were added together.

At the meeting the LDP process was explained, while the slide presentation was accompanied by a narrative to clearly outline where the sites were in relation to existing landmarks. People were urged to place their comments on the LDP website if they hadn’t already done so

Voluntary donations to cover the costs of the meeting etc were freely made an it was decided to begin a fund to generate money to pay for anything needed to ensure that Cimla people today could look forward to a tomorrow Cimla they would be happy to live in.

What next?

The views of the packed audience were considered and in addition to agreeing to hold an update meeting at a larger venue within two months of the initial one it was agreed to establish a group name and this website.

An amount of press coverage was generated before and after the meeting which served to alert our own and other areas to what was going on.

Please support YOUR group and help to safeguard the future of OUR Cimla.
